Putting the Energy of YOU into
Your Emails
When you meet someone in person, they receive
the fullest impression of you and your energy. They
see how your smile lights up your face, they feel your warm
handshake or hug, they hear your laugh.
When you speak on the phone, some of that experience
is lost. They don't see your body language,
they don't feel your handshake or hug.
When you use email, EVEN MORE of that experience
is lost. They don't see you, hear you, smell you,
or feel you. All that is left are your words.
So
how can your unique energy show up most powerfully in your
email? How can you convey the unique wonderful-ness
of you in text?!
Keep in mind that your email gives someone an experience
of you, so your email is not JUST about setting up your
meeting or giving them your phone number. "I've
learned that people will forget what you said, people will
forget what you did, but people will never forget how you
made them feel." - Maya Angelou
Here are 4 tips for creating an experience for
your email partner, which in turn will create a stronger
connection between you two.
- Choose a special greeting, that you always
use, that conveys your spirit and energy. One
of my colleagues always starts her emails to me with:
Marcy! That sure grabs my attention! She is very
high energy and so is her greeting. Another colleague
and her entire team always use: Joy to you Marcy!
in their emails to me. That immediately sets a warm tone.
I love receiving joy! So I'm immediately in a good mood
upon reading their emails.
- Choose a special closing that you always use.
My particular closing that conveys my energy
is: Looking forward to connecting. I sometimes
use: Dedicated to your expansion. I chose those
because connecting and expansion are two of my favorite
aspects of my work! I love connecting with people and
I want expansion for all my clients.
- Use emotional words in your email. Instead
of sticking just the usual: "How are you? Is
Tuesday a good time to meet?" , you'll
create a stronger connection, an experience and an ambience
by using adjectives and discussing emotions. "I'm
glad we met", "I enjoyed your humorous take
on the situation", "I'm thrilled",
"let's meet for a fun conversation over lunch".
- Your email signature is an easy, concise way to convey
who you are.
- Under your name, add one of YOUR sayings or
add a quote. That shows where your mindset is,
and what your philosophy is.
- What title do you choose to use? The
title you give yourself will establish you as an expert
(or guide, or whatever ROLE you want to establish for
yourself). If you're using a fixed title (like Senior
Director, My Direct Selling Company), then the quote or
saying will be conveying what you're an expert in
and what you're passionate about.
- Add your photo. I have had very intimate
coaching relationships with clients I've never seen
in person! I love seeing my clients' photo in their
email signatures.
Every interaction you have: in-person, on the phone, via
email – is creating an experience of you in your
conversation partner's mind. You can easily enhance
their experience in email – the mode of communication
that's carrying the least information about you
– in these simple ways.
CALL TO ACTION
Do you want to create an experience of you that reflects
you are, or leave it to chance? Do you want to stand out
as an individual, or come across in a generic way?
If you want to create stronger connection with your partner,
then take a minute right now to open your email package.
Look for a menu option like Tools or Account Settings. That
should lead you to your Signature, with a place where you
can type in your email signature.
Make sure you have your full name, your title, your company
and your contact information in your signature. Then layer
in the additional elements that create the experience of
you: a saying, your photo.
This takes only a moment of your time NOW, and
it leaves a long-lasting impression with your reader.
If your business is dragging, and you feel like you're
not creating strong relationships with prospects, then it's
time for an outside, objective look at your business.
