Two of my friends who were World War II veterans died, two friends' mothers died, and other friends' relatives as well. Then I had to put Holly, one of my two cats, to sleep about four weeks after she was diagnosed with a terminal and incurable illness. This photo, taken shortly after I adopted her, shows off Holly's beauty mark on her face. I am big believer in the idea that when one door closes, another door opens. The pain and sadness is still here, and simultaneously new possibilities open up. I'm remembering some old friends and feeling some new potential as well. One of the exciting business opportunities happening in the midst of this - because the happiness and the sadness are all mixed up together in life - is the fun I'm having connecting with so many women through the Direct Selling Power book. Register f*ree at Feature Article Should You Do More or Do Something Different?There's a huge difference between doing more vs. getting better results! I recently gave my business coach a testimonial. (Yes, coaches have coaches!) In the course of writing that testimonial, I revisited the sequence of events that led me to her. I had listened to one of her teleclasses and LOVED her message. She was talking about the emotional and spiritual side of being an entrepreneur, which was where I KNEW I was having a problem. Over the next couple months, I continued to listen to her speak and I really got that feeling that she was on the wavelength I needed to be on. She shared an upcoming opportunity to go deeper with her work, in a bootcamp program starting in June. I looked at the content and thought "Great!" I looked at the price and thought "Whoa - that's a lot of money." I made a deal with myself - I would redouble my efforts to build my business over the next 3 months, and if it didn't work, I'd join the next bootcamp in September. I tried to work harder, but I quickly fell back to my old ways. I couldn't sustain my energy. During those 3 months, I attracted zero clients; I blew through 3 more months of my savings; and I continued to feel uncertain and stressed about my business. So I did join the September bootcamp. And that is when my business really began to turn around. Although that deal I made with myself sounded reasonable (try even harder for 3 months), it was based on a fallacy. And I see so many entrepreneurs who are living out that same fallacy. The fallacy is: I will keep doing all the same things, and spend twice as much time and energy doing those same things, and my results will be different and better! When the "same thing" has yielded zero or minimal results, does it make sense to When your actions are consistently yielding little or no results and emotionally you're feeling like you're being sucked down the drain, that is the time to try something NEW vs. more of the old. What is that new thing? Let me tell you it is not Twitter. Instead, it's whatever you're most afraid of. It's what you are spending the most time and energy trying to ignore. It takes many different shapes, because it's different for each person. Here are three of the common
energy-sucking problems I see. 1. Feeling so uncertain of your value that you are uncomfortable engaging with prospects AND clients.This is probably the most common mindset problem that I see. It's also one I've had first-hand experience with. In this situation, you are occasionally in touch with the knowledge and satisfaction of
You spend a lot of time second-guessing yourself and replaying conversations in your mind. 2. Ignoring your true calling and purpose.Why ignore it? That calling may feel uncomfortable to you. Or perhaps you're concerned about how other people will receive or judge that work. So you rationalize why you shouldn't follow that path, or you distract yourself with other work. But that inner voice never goes away. Eventually, you just don't have the energy to keep ignoring it. You're too worn out and feel too out of integrity and inauthentic to yourself to ignore it. 3. Staying so busy on insignificant things that you have no quality time left for your business.One unconscious defense mechanism against changing anything is to create a lot of brouhaha that comes between you and what you need to do. That brouhaha can take the form of emotional drama, or a mile-long to-do list where the important business items are always at the bottom, or physically manifest as clutter. In each case, you are consistently giving something OTHER than your business the highest priority on your time. This can look like: you have a BIG vision for your business but you can't get even started on step one to make it happen. You may also have a number of people in your life who complain about where you spend your time (or about your clutter), because the inability to prioritize affects EVERY aspect of your life. What's the solution for these 3 common problems? It is your mindset. Once you get really clear about your unique skills and abilities, the specifics of what you offer and who wants it, then you are much more grounded with and in touch with the value of your offer. Then you can easily communicate that value to others. Once you accept your passionate purpose - what you're being called to accomplish through your business - AND you understand that your ideal clients are in fact out there, and they want YOU to show them how to get the results of that passionate purpose, then it's easy to release your fear about getting hurt or being judged. Once you allow yourself to be the priority in your life and you understand that your value comes from who you are, not what you do, then you can become more skilled at and at ease with setting priorities on where you put your time and attention. Each of these solutions starts with your mindset. So Twitter will not fix the problem, nor will a newsletter, nor a new business card or web site. The answer is to THINK something different. Once you are thinking different thoughts, you'll find that your words change. Along with new thoughts and words, your actions will change. And it will all feel very natural, with a new thought leading to new language leading to new actions. When you change yourself, your business will change. I can 100% guarantee that!
