Hi there,

I’ve had a lot of fun watching a pair of robins hatch 5 babies in a nest on my deck. During the last week, the fledglings have grown at a rapid rate. Mom and dad were constantly showing up with multiple worms hanging out of their beaks. I didn’t know birds could catch a second worm without dropping the first, much less catch a third and fourth – now I know better!

When would the fledglings learn to fly? That question was answered on Tuesday. I was sweeping the deck and, without thinking, pulled an iron table across the deck. Iron screeched on wood; many robin wings flapped; and alarmed robin chirps came from all directions.

The five fledglings flew out of the nest in an instant! Two landed on the deck and three flew across the street into a tree. The alarmed parents alternated visiting the deck to chirp at the two stranded there, and almost immediately the two fledglings flew off with them.

That was the sudden end to the robins’ nesting. The fledglings have left the nest, for good.

We grow; we fly; we fall down; we fly.

Best wishes for your spring-time expansion,

Marcy Stahl

Who Do You Need to Be in Your Business?

In my last ezine, I wrote about expansion. I recommended that you take your current # of clients or recruits and add a zero to the end of that number (which I call 10X). I asked whether you need to change the way you’re showing up in the world: the way you’re thinking, speaking and feeling, in order to change the lives of 10X?

Many women entrepreneurs I meet are NOT playing their bigger game, the bigger game that will connect them with their 10X. They’re not fully claiming ownership of all their wonderful gifts and skills, and they’re not fully sharing those gifts with the world.

When you’re not claiming or sharing your true gifts, you may feel tentative in conversations, or you spend more time wondering what people what to hear instead of focusing on what you want to say, or you try to guess the effect you’re having on someone vs. putting your message straight out there. You may be uncomfortable when people compliment you, so you immediately shift the conversation away from you.

When you’re not being fully you, you are uncomfortable plus you don’t connect with your ideal client or team member as deeply and strongly as you can.

There are two questions to ask yourself:

1. Who do I need to be, in order to connect with (and inspire, educate, and change the lives of) my 10X?

2. What’s getting in the way of me being that person? Of truly embodying all that passion, excitement, and purpose that I already feel?

I encourage you to reflect on those questions and come up with your own answers. I’ll share my thoughts on this.

The answer to #1 is: You just need to be the more authentic, more relaxed, more present you. It’s who you already are; you’re just keeping your light under a bushel.

A common answer to #2 is that it doesn’t feel safe for you to be the authentic you.

I’ve been there with the lack of safety. When I was growing up, I had a couple pivotal experiences with mean girls in school that made me feel it was NOT safe to be me. In 5th and 8th grades, I was in schools in very small, rural towns. After a move from Hawaii both times (my father was in the Navy), I showed up on the scene as my cute and smart self. In each school, the dominant girls in my small class were aggressive and mean to me, to the point of threatening me physically. As a result: I felt like I needed to keep my intelligence and my quirky sense of humor hidden. Being bland and fitting into the middle of the group felt like the safest option.

Fast forward to my adult life, and I’m still occasionally insecure in groups of strange women as to whether I’ll be accepted or not.

I’m sharing this story to illustrate a couple key points that I see over and over again in clients and colleagues (and me).

What holds you back from being your very best, most empowered and authentic YOU in your business is very often the feeling that you will not be safe if you change. Your conscious mind can be 100% committed to a specific goal in your business, and also know what you need to do to achieve that goal. But if taking that action feels unsafe to your subconscious, you are either going to be totally stuck, or you’ll be moving in fits and starts; occasionally you’ll take weak action and you’ll immediately have problems taking the next step.

We humans tend to make big life-changing decisions about how to act based on one experience. We have one bad relationship, get in one car accident, become ill one time, or upset one friend, and from that one data point, we draw some cause-and-effect relationship that determines our behavior for the rest of our lives!

Imagine you come down with a serious (and common) disease, go to the ER, and the doctor says: “I’ve treated this ONCE and it didn’t work. I’m going to do exactly that same treatment with you.” Does that make sense? NO! But that’s what most of us are repeatedly doing in our own lives.

Remember: in your business, your 10X are waiting specifically for YOU! They will hear the message you bring more clearly than that same message delivered by anyone else, because they are a version of you. What you say and do connects with them more deeply than anyone else. Until you show up, they will remain stuck with their current problem – the problem that only YOU can help them with!

The only way for you to connect with your 10X is for you to fully express who you are, in all your glory! When you think: “I need to hide or downplay this aspect of me, because it’s not mainstream or it’s not what people “want” to hear or it’s not serious (and business should be serious),” those thoughts are leading you back into smallness, and away from your 10X.

To move forward into your glory, put more of your energy into your big WHY (why you’re in business). The more you connect with your deepest reason for being in your business, which is the desire to improve people’s lives in your unique and specific way, the more energy you are investing in growth vs. stagnation.

Next, consider the issue of safety. Lack of safety and business growth do not go together. When you feel unsafe, you either don’t take action or you take the WRONG action. Whenever you feel stuck in your business, when you’re not taking the action that part of you WANTS to take, ask yourself: “Does it feel safe for me to take that action?” If the answer is No, then you’ll want to pull the string on that – what outcome do you fear? What does it remind you of from your past? You’ll want to become conscious of WHY you feel insecure, so you can start providing your own security.

Your people are waiting for YOU to show up and help them. There are more of your people waiting than you might have imagined. What’s holding you back from showing up to help them?

CALL TO ACTION

1. What is your 10X number? How many people are you directly serving in your business? These are your clients or your team members. Write this number down; I’m going to call this number X. (If you’re just starting and don’t yet have clients or recruits, let X=1.)

Take that number and add a zero to the end, so it’s 10 times X. What will you need to change in your business to serve that new 10X number?

2. What needs to change in the way you’re showing up in the world: the way you’re thinking, speaking and feeling, in order to change the lives of 10X?

3. What feels unsafe or scary about being that person?

4. What steps can I take to make it safe and feasible for me to expand into my own fullness and authenticity?

If you’re having trouble answering these questions, or you’d like some expert support for your expansion, then check out my new Expand Your Mind, Expand Your Mo.ney program. We’ve just started, so it’s not too late to join in.

Here's what a recent client has to say about their experience working with me.

"I have had my own business for almost 20 years and totally love it. In that whole time, I have always hated "marketing". To me, marketing was the word to describe all the things I didn't like about being in business. I tried to avoid thinking about it, but if I had to define it in my mind, it was "not very fun things I had to do to get people to do what I wanted them to do"

That was a formula for disaster. Whatever I said or wrote was filtered through "what would they want to hear". Or "what can I say that would make someone do ... whatever"

Marcy helped me see that marketing is really just being willing to be more me. I write and say whatever lights me up. The people who are touched by my authenticity are exactly the ones I want to be working with!"
